Merchiston Castle School is steeped in sporting excellence and for over 180 years the School has produced a wide range of sportsmen. From the three Merchistonians who played for Scotland in the world’s first-ever rugby international, to a further 66 rugby internationalists, 23 cricket internationalists and national honours in tennis, athletics and shooting, it is perhaps no surprise that the School’s Golf Academy, which launched in 2011, has already produced superb young talent.

The ISGA Scottish Open was held at Kings Acre in October of this year. A total of 23 school teams from as far away as Berkshire competed for the Kings Acre trophy. The field of players from Scotland, England and Wales proved to be one of the strongest ever seen at the Scottish event.

The Merchiston team produced a win unparalleled in the School’s golfing history by winning the U18 Gross team prize in the ISGA Scottish Open against the very best independent schools in the country. As such, at this stage in the season, Merchiston is currently ranked Number 1 in the UK for golf. The boys who brought home this superb victory were Murray (LVI), Morgan (LVI) and Golf Academy captain Max (V). Murray shot a 2 under par round of 68, Morgan shot a level par round of 70 and Max shot a 1 over par 71.

Murray, who recently joined the School, is seen as one of the best young golfers in Scotland. Max joined the school in 2010. Since 2010, Alan Murdoch, Director of Golf at Merchiston, has worked very hard with Max, “I am delighted with Max’s progress and I now have such confidence in him that he has been chosen as the new Captain of the Academy. Morgan joined the School in 2009 and decided in 2011 that he would give up playing rugby to focus on golf, his true sporting passion. The fact that he carded a level par round on Monday and still finished with two bogeys on 17 and 18 shows how much more he has to offer! With continued hard work, the season looks bright for these young golfers.”
