The Caledonian Mercury doesn't like to take credit for too much, but we do really feel that all of our readers who took advantage of the odds we flagged up yesterday – on Ken Clarke falling asleep during the Budget speech – do now have reason to thank us.
After we drew attention to the Ladbrokes odds of 16/1 on the former chancellor snoozing during his successor's speech today, several punters put money on and now Ladbrokes have apparently confirmed (according to the Daily Telegraph and the Guardian, among others) that Mr Clarke did indeed fall asleep and the bookmakers have now paid out.
We may not have been able to provide a decent tip for the Cheltenham Gold Cup, and heaven knows I was hopelessly out in suggesting that Scotland might do well in the Six Nations (won't make that mistake again…). But, at The Caledonian Mercury, we know a good political bet when we see one.
Thanks Ken, you've made our day.
