Phone Hacking: The Movie

There is little doubt a film, or TV drama, will be made about the phone hacking story, the scandal which led more TV reports (if not items in newsprint) will be made. It could be a thriller. It could be a farce. It could be a bittersweet tragedy. Or a Richard Curtis romantic comedy, The Chipping Norton Set, with a Prime Minister pulling out all the stops to woo the flame-haired newspaper executive with late night dinners. Steve Coogan, Hugh Grant and Jeremy Clarkson could even play themselves. In which case, who are the other cast members? Some suggestions follow... For the recently-bailed Andy Coulson, an actor with Barrow boy charm, who could sell sand to the eskimos but with a slight criminal undertones, Danny Dyer might be the go-to guy. If they want a bigger star, Tom Hardy might be another option. Rebekah Brooks - Dead Calm-period Nicole Kidman. If she’s not available, only one other obvious candidate. The Prime Minister David Cameron should be played by someone upper crust who has to perform a quick reverse ferret on the tabloids. Hugh Bonneville from Downton Abbey could work. Scourge of the hackers, the MP who wouldn't let it go, Tom Watson - Phil Jupitus. Private investigator Glenn Mulclaire is known as "Trigger". Therefore,Roger Lloyd Pack could well be the actor brave enough to represent him. John Yates, the man at the Yard policing the original investigation? In the absence of Inspector Clouseau, send for Barry Van Dyke from Diagnosis Murder. A wiry, aged actor is required to play the Guardian’s intrepid phone-hacking correspondent Nick Davies. The obvious man for the role: Malcolm McDowell. For James Murdoch, we’re not talking Robert Mitchum. Jake Shears of the Scissor Sisters could make his acting debut, but for the real authority and weight as conveyed in his press conference, Niles Crane himself, David Hyde Pierce, would be ideal. For James’ dad, Scotland’s very own Ian McDiarmid. He’s already been in Revenge Of the Sith, a News Corp production. This film, once its plot plays out, could be about Revenge On The Sith.
