The United Nations has declared this the "Decade of Action for Road Safety". The UN points out that someone is killed or seriously injured on the world’s roads every six seconds – and that, with 1.3 million dying every year, this is a global epidemic comparable to malaria or tuberculosis. Yet by comparison to other global killers, road injury is utterly neglected.
Motor manufacturers are playing their part in making vehicles safer, spending billions of pounds on research and development. This week, Ford Europe brought the company's "Future of Safety" roadshow to Glasgow.
Ford say that their new high-tech systems are available as optional extras in the new Focus, but insist that the cars will still be affordable.
