HSBC is making determined efforts to expand its presence in Scotland. People here may not remember that the bank was founded by a Scot, Sir Thomas Sutherland (1834–1922), and its current senior management is still heavily dominated by Scots.
The bank is opening new branches in central Scotland and staff are making determined efforts to get out and meet new customers, to explain the way they work – which is a lot more “traditional” than many of the other banks around the country.
HSBC is well capitalised, has a relatively conservative lending policy, but always recognises that banking is a personal business, something many of the others seems to have forgotten. As part of its drive to meet the people, senior executives such as John Rendall have been to business groups including the revitalised Power Lunch Club, of which it is a major sponsor, although no longer the only one.
